A normal birth, provided it is low risk, only needs close observation by a trained and skilled midwife in order to detect early signs of complications. It needs no interventions but encouragement, support, and little tender loving care.
Continuous empathetic support in labour by one single person, doula or midwife resultes in many benefits, including shorter labour, significantly less medication and epidural analgesia, fewer operative deliveries and fewer newborns who need medical help.
